Slaying Giants

img_0084
my peers, my bosses, my family
told me it could not be done
my peers, my bosses, my family
told me it was not possible

but it was accomplished anyway
despite fears, despite doubt
battle after battle i slew giants
armed with my faith, my sling, my stones

when i inquired about leaving
the good old boy network in the south
southern belles, southern beaus told me
surely I could not make it in New York

but i traveled up north anyway
i found an open door
i landed the promotion i wanted
armed with my faith, my sling, my stones

not complacent in New York i asked again
what does it take to work overseas
department managers screamed
it can’t be done, it can’t be done

but i traveled to Prague anyway
opportunity found me looking
and I worked in Warsaw, in Kielce,
in Lublin, in Rzeszow, in Katowice, in Opole

armed with my faith, my sling, my stones

then i received another offer
I worked in Prague, in Budapest,
in St. Petersburg, in Moscow,
in Vienna, in many more

armed with my faith, my sling, my stones

my peers, my bosses, my family
told me it could not be done
my peers, my bosses, my family
told me it was not possible

but it was accomplished anyway
despite fears, despite doubt
battle after battle i slew giants
armed with my faith, my sling, my stones

“Slaying Giants” and many other poems can be read in “Good Morning New Year” by Jerry T Johnson.
